Hello,
I have a CD with 3 .WAV files on it that I need to desperately listen to. When I try to open them, windows media player will open and then this error pops up. "An audio codec is needed to play this file. To determine if this codec is available to download from the Web, click Web Help." When I click on help it goes to a page saying "Windows Media Player cannot play the file (or cannot play either the audio or video portion of the file) because the Fraunhofer IIS MPEG-2 AAC (180) codec is not installed on your computer." I then looked up this codec and downloaded the file from this page http://www.fileguru....2_aac_180_codec I installed this codec and it still does not work. I cannot find this codec anywhere else. I have tried to convert these files from .WAV to .MP3 and that has not worked either. I get an error saying that it cannot be completed. I need to listen to these files for a very important hearing next month.
If there is anyone that could please help me I would be very grateful.

Hi there, and Welcome.
Some encoding done on / for sound files can be a real headache at times.
Some suggestions. - Not in any particular order.
Try another player/s. Winamp, FLV, Irfanview + Plugins, plenty of other freeware players out there, that sometimes come with a colourful selection of codecs supplied. (Yep I did say Irfanview !)
Try getting the files into an audio editor, and then exporting them out again in the same or another format. ( *Audacity* springs immediately to mind, but there are other freeware editors out there)
Try using an online conversion service. Some here:

Keep punching away at them. Unless they are corrupt, something will open them in the end.

Hi John, thank you for the reply. I forgot to mention that I did try to play them in the VLC player and that did not work. I will try out your suggestions when I get home from work today, and I'll post an update!

I am still having problems listening to these. I have tried everything that John has mentioned. I don't know what to do. Is there any other sites that may have this codec? Any one have any other ideas? Thank you!

Try K lite codec pack http://www.free-code..._codec_pack.htm which offers just about every available codec. It's free and quite safe to use.

Well........there is another chance, - with K lite.
Like I have already said:
End of the day if nothing is working, upload them to a free file host, give us the URL and I or someone else will have a go a cracking them open.
If you've tried absolutely everything that I suggested, and the K lite pack isn't doing any good think of them as possibly corrupted.
"GSpot" should have been in the first pack you downloaded. Check them out with that.

Ok, I will try everything you guys posted tonight.
I did try that youconverit.com site, even have the email to prove it! The email states "Dear YouConvertIt.com user,
your file (MCJCW_MVFTR1_2_8_10_9_36_01caa8a22f7ba0c0.wav) have failed to convert, rest assure that this email have been forwarded to our developers so that they can take necessary actions to fix the problem."
